Emergency Closings
Keeping Our Students Safe
The safety of your child is of utmost concern. Please review the school’s general rules and safety precautions with your child, putting particular emphasis on bicycle and bus rules and returning home immediately after school unless other arrangements have been made. If you transport your child to school by car, please use the areas designated by the school for dropping off and picking up your child.
Accidents
Minor accidents occurring during the school day are treated by the classroom teacher or registered nurse. If the injury appears serious, the registered nurse will call the parent. If the parent cannot be reached, the school then will call the emergency number provided on the enrollment form. If the parent or the designated emergency contact are not available and the injury requires immediate aid, the child will be taken to the nearest hospital by paramedics. Either the registered nurse or the principal will accompany the child while school staff continues to try to locate the parent. School insurance is available to all parents for their children and a variety of plans are available to parents for their purchase. Student accident insurance information, available plans and costs are outlined in the registration letter to parents each spring. Contact your school office for a form to complete and obtain payment information.
Severe Weather Conditions / Transportation Services
Snow, ice, and extremely cold temperatures may affect bus pick-up and drop-off times, sometimes causing buses to run late. The school district has the serious responsibility of deciding whether to close schools. Generally, schools will remain open except for extremely inclement weather.
The district uses SchoolReach notification system to notify parents of school closures and emergency information. PLEASE CLICK BELOW TO READ HOW SCHOOLREACH WORKS AND TO MAKE SURE THAT YOUR TELEPHONE IS SET UP TO RECEIVE SCHOOLREACH CALLS. Parents should make sure that they update address and telephone information in their school office, so that they will receive district information.
On inclement weather days, the school district will make every effort to notify parents by 5:30 a.m. of school closures through the SchoolReach notification system by telephone. School closings will be posted on the district website and Somonauk CUSD #432 closing information can be heard on WSPY-FM 107.1. Parents can also go to www.emergencyclosings.com for school closing information and can sign up for e-mail of notification of school closing through this site. Parents may also call the district's main number at 815-498-2314 for a recorded message.
Emergency School Closing
If school needs to be dismissed during the day due to an emergency, parents will be notified through the SchoolReach notification system. WSPY 107.1 will also be notified. If the possibility exists that a parent or older sibling will not be home, parents need to designate an alternate destination for their children if school dismisses early due to inclement weather or an unforeseen circumstance. This information should be on the student information form that was completed at registration. Parents should ensure that their children know what to do in the event of a school closure or emergency.
Fire and Disaster
Fire and disaster drills are held at various times throughout the school year. A copy of the Fire and Disaster Drill Procedures is posted in each room in the school building. If a tornado warning or a civil defense alert is in effect at the regular dismissal time, students will be kept at school until an all clear is signaled or a parent/guardian comes to the school for the student. Children will be released only to their own parents unless a letter is on file in the school office designating another individual to whom a child should be released. When the all clear is signaled, children who ride the bus will be picked up at their schools in the regular sequence. If a tornado watch is in effect, meaning tornado conditions exist for a very large area, schools will be dismissed at regular times and buses will pick up students at their schools according to the regular schedule. PLEASE DESIGNATE AN ALTERNATE DESTINATION FOR YOUR CHILD IN CASE YOU ARE NOT HOME DURING AN ALERT OR STORM WARNING. All schools will be notified of impending disaster through a National Weather Service alert monitor system.
If any other type of disaster or crisis occurs, parents will be notified through the SchoolReach notification system and through WSPY 107.1. Students will only be released to their own parents unless a letter is on file in the school office designating another individual to whom a child should be released.
