UPDATE on Somonauk School LUNCH On Monday, August 31, 2020 the USDA, U.S. Department of Agriculture announced that they will extend FREE lunch to all children in the fall months during the COVID -19 pandemic. 1A celebrating the 100th day of school!!
WOW! What an amazing night at the K-3 Winter Program! The kids sounded amazing and gave a great performance to a full house!! We had to find more chairs and even pulled out the bleachers on the stage! Kudos to Mrs. Duffield for all she did to make the night a success! There is a LOT that goes on behind the scenes. I forgot to thank the JRW PTO, especially Shannon Mitchell and Crystal Pyle for creating a festive ambiance! So....thank you! Have a wonderful weekend!
Roller skating starts on Monday, December 9. Your child may bring in protective gear if they wish (helmet, elbow or knee pads). Wrist guards are provided. Lets have some fun.

Our Junior Bobcats for the months of August and September were treated to a special recognition breakfast today! Thank you to our guest speaker, Shayne Stoddard; Somonauk alumni, Youth Pastor at Harvest Chapel, and assistant SHS Soccer Coach, for connecting the Junior Bobcat Way to real-life scenarios! And a special thank you to all of the family members able join us as well! We are grateful for your continued support!

The JRW faculty and staff would like to thank everyone who was able to attend our Open House last night! We had a great turnout! We appreciate and value very much the home-school connection. Please feel free to reach out to your child's teacher at any time. If you were unable to make the Open House last night, please contact either your child's teacher or the JRW office to schedule a time for student-parent-teacher conferences, which are coming up on Thursday, October 10th. We would also like to extend an enthusiastic thank you for all of the support of our One School One Book program. With your generosity we raised almost $800 to continue our efforts with literacy initiatives! Congratulations to Karen Taylor, the SEF raffle winner of the reserved parking spot for the year right outside the main doors!
Somonauk #432 Preschool Screening What is Preschool Screening? To help identify children ages 3-5 who may qualify for special education services Somonauk CUSD 432 offers preschool screening. Our screening team will briefly assess your child’s developmental skills in the areas of pre-academic learning concepts, motor skills, and communication, as well as hearing and vision. If you suspect that your child is experiencing one or more delays in her or his development, please contact James R. Wood Elementary school. Screening dates for the '19-'20 school year To schedule an appointment or ask questions related to screening you can call (815)498-2338 ext 1224. Screenings are held at Somonauk Public Library . Screening appointments are available afternoons on the following dates: October 10, 2019 February 7, 2020 April 3, 2020 What to expect at the screening: Screening consists of three components. Your child will have his/her vision and hearing tested. Family health history may also be reviewed at this time. Your child’s development will be assessed using the Brigance Preschool Screen. Your child’s language and communication skills will then be assessed by a speech pathologist. *Please bring your completed questionnaires with you to your appointment. What happens after screening? Upon completion of the screening, a team member will meet with you to review your child’s results. If your child demonstrated developmentally appropriate skills no further action is required, if the team determines there are areas of concern, a further evaluation may be recommended.

JRW is collecting Bottle Caps! We are collecting bottle caps to exchange/purchase a bench to place by the Max Zimmerlein memorial tree by the cafeteria. Bottle caps can be dropped off on Tuesday, August 13th during supply drop off between 3 - 7 pm.
Another successful Field Day is in the books. The rain held off and the kids had a blast. A HUGE thank you to all those parents that volunteered to help. Your enthusiasm keeps the kids going. Thanks again.

Due to the extreme weather at around 11:45 a.m. all District 432 schools had taken precautionary measures & students took shelter. The district has released students back to class.
Don't forget.....Kindergarten and Preschool Registration for the 2019-2020 school year is tomorrow night (Thursday - May 2nd) from 5 - 7 pm at James R. Wood Elementary School. Please visit the JRW website for required items. Thank you!
Smile Illinois...the mobile dentist and hygienists will be in the district and providing dental exams, cleaning, fluoride treatment and apply sealants (if age appropriate) on Monday May 13th. Students pre-k through 8th grade are eligible and the exam will be valid for required dental exams for Kindergarten, 2nd and 6th grade. Medicaid and private insurance as well as self pay is accepted. Permission forms were sent home the week of April 1st however additional forms are available in JRW and SMS offices. Deadline for sign up is Friday May 3rd. There needs to be at least 20 students signed up for the visit or it will be cancelled. We are still short of that goal!
