Students, faculty, staff, and the Somonauk community would like to recognize and show appreciation to the Somonauk School District #432 school board members. This week is an opportunity to honor school board members who serve as unpaid volunteers for the benefit of the students and community residents, while also acting as front-line education advocates providing a local voice and vision for the district. All of these responsibilities still hold true, but they take on a much larger meaning in 2020. Thank you for your time, dedication, and service!

VETERANS DAY 2020 Somonauk Community Unit School District #432 would like to honor our United States Veterans during the week of Veterans Day. While our annual school assembly cannot take place in person this year, we would still like to acknowledge our local veterans who selflessly served our country. Please help us pay tribute to them in a virtual ceremony by sending a digital photo or two, possibly “then” and “now”, of a veteran that you know, as well as branch served, time period, and any special recognition (i.e., Lt. John Patrick, Army, 1965-1969, 2 Bronze Stars) Somonauk School District values the service of our Veterans, we look forward to honoring them and their families this year. Please send the pictures to nesse@somonauk.net by November 2, 2020, in order to be included in the presentation.

Somonauk Bobcats made their first eSports appearance Monday evening against Bacon County High School. Kyle Davenport, Mikey Lewinski, and Julio Salgado made up the Rocket League trio team against a veteran group that has spent three years playing together. While the outcome wasn’t what they desired in a best of five series, the Bobcats were able to work together as a team that never played a round as a team before this evening, and were able to pull positives out of the match. “I couldn’t be prouder of you gentlemen” stated Coach McMahan. “You are the first to represent Somonauk eSports, and we are going to do great things!” Look for more upcoming matches in the near future!

Information below is from the updated 8/14/20 IDPH guidelines. Can athletic face coverings, e.g., neck warmers be used as a substitute for cloth face coverings? CDC does not recommend use of athletic face coverings/neck warmers as a substitute for cloth face coverings. It is not known if athletic face coverings/neck warmers provide any benefit as source control to protect others from the spray of respiratory particles. ~~ Somonauk School District will NOT be allowing the use of neck warmers/gaiters. How should cloth face coverings be cleaned and stored? Personal cloth face coverings should be taken home, laundered daily, dried in a dryer, and reused. Personal cloth face coverings should be stored between uses in a clean paper bag or breathable container. When should a face covering be changed? Face coverings must be changed immediately if soiled, wet, or torn. ~~ Parents are encouraged to send with their student, 2 face masks and a brown paper bag for mask storage. ~~

When you approach any of our Somonauk schools as a visitor, you may notice that the windows and doors have images of Bobcats or paws prints on them. While they are very appealing to the eye, they serve as a visual barrier to protect our students and staff. These window guards are funded through a Safe Schools Grant and are strategically placed to avoid direct sight into our buildings where students and staff are present.

To cap off National Bully Prevention week, Ms. Ozarka along with her leadership group hosted ‘mix it up at lunch day!’ Each student was given a new table to sit at in order to help meet new friends, learn something new about a classmate and spread kindness around our school. They played games and enjoyed a movie. Even though the week is over, SMS will continue our quest for kindness and being bully free!

Somonauk School District #432 Families, Today, as individual schools within the district, alongside the Somonauk Police department, we practiced our Run-Hide-Fight protocol with our students. This approach takes the lockdown approach that was used previously, and adds some additional options. Teachers and staff have reviewed and interacted with the Run-Hide-Fight protocol for the past year. This practice drill is required by the School Safety Act. Each school and every child did an exceptional job in this drill today, but still may have some questions for you tonight. If you have any follow up questions or concerns, please reach out to the building principals.
