Return to Learn Plan

updates from the Superintendent:

April 1, 2020

Dear Bobcat Families,

As Somonauk School District #432, we recognize that these are unsettling times to raise your child(ren) and that you are being asked to do something that has never been attempted before in Illinois schools, facilitate learning AT HOME. Our teachers are navigating this new adventure and together we will be stronger than ever imagined.

Originally, Gov. J.B. Pritzker issued all Illinois Public Schools to close until Tuesday, April 8th. Yesterday, March 31, 2020, the Governor stated that Illinois' stay-at-home order will be extended through April 30, 2020. Illinois schools across the state will not resume in-person instruction until May 1 at the earliest.

This announcement will no doubt fuel a variety of questions surrounding any end of the year events, (i.e. prom, field trips, talent shows, musicals, etc). We are optimistically holding out hope that we will be able to have some of these milestone events in some fashion. As we approach May, we will have a better idea of the status of our “Stay at Home” order and can plan accordingly.

Districts can use up to five “remote learning plan days” for educators to plan and prepare lessons. These days will be used as teacher work days and no activities will be assigned on those days. Somonauk has already planned for these days as the following:

March 31- Remote Learning Plan Day

April 1- Remote Learning Plan Day

April 10- No School Good Friday

April 13- No School Easter Holiday

April 20- Remote Learning Plan Day

The Governor also reiterated that students will not be expected to master and will not be penalized for failure to master new content. There should be no educational harm to a student’s grade due to remote learning, no child’s grade should be lowered during the remote learning period. But he did encourage that students need to stay connected. Ultimately, we need students to continue to progress towards meeting standards for each grade level or course. Student engagement in Remote Learning is the best way for us to continue the learning process.

Please also encourage the “Stay at Home” order with your children. This includes the JRW playground which will remain closed throughout the stay at home order.

Dear Somonauk Bobcat Families,

On Friday afternoon, Governor Pritzker issued an executive order requiring residents to “stay at home” effective Saturday, March 21 at 5:00 pm, through the end of April 7. As part of the Governor’s order, he announced that school will remain closed, with a new tentative reopening date of April 8. We recognize that this development may raise questions about the impact on students, staff, and families as well as the school’s vital role of providing meals to students and families while schools are closed. We anticipate further guidance and details from the Illinois State Board of Education next week.

Somonauk School District will observe our planned Spring Break; there will be no home/eLearning activities sent to students. The buildings will be closed for the entire week of March 23- 27, 2020.

There will be no home learning taking place during Spring Break. Details on what those plans are moving forward will be communicated next week.

#432 School Lunch Form - School Closure

Please use this opportunity to focus on staying safe and helping to slow the spread of the virus. As always, thank you for your patience and support as we all work through the COVID-19 Pandemic. As you have seen, this situation is evolving rapidly. As events unfold, we will continue to communicate in a timely and transparent manner.

Stay Safe

Bobcat Families:

You may have heard the governor's speech today where he ordered a shelter in place throughout Illinois through April 7. We are still waiting on guidance from ISBE as to how this will impact schools. We will utilize these guidelines to finalize our plans for students during that time. For now, please follow the guidelines for the shelter in place. Thanks and stay healthy!

Reminders for Families and Students

For students in all grade levels, there is a common set of expectations:

  • We understand that every student and family will be in a different situation with differing schedules and levels of connectivity.
  • We have asked our staff to make accommodations as needed to ensure that all students are able to successfully engage in learning.
  • Teachers will be available for student communication and feedback beginning Tuesday, March 17, 2020.
  • The District will not be recording student attendance during the emergency closure. Therefore parents do not need to notify us if your student is sick.

All students in grades 7th through 12th grade have been assigned a Chromebook to utilize at home. If your student is in need of INTERNET ACCESS because it is not available in your household, please contact Somonauk High School’s office at (815) 498-2314 to make other arrangements.

An email was sent home as well as a text message to sign up for free lunch for your child(ren). Please see email or text or call one of the school offices to request lunch. Lunches can be picked up daily at Somonauk High School and if necessary, can be delivered to your home.

BOBCAT Families,

Somonauk School District #432 will be CLOSED through March 30, 2020 in order to abide by the social distancing recommendation from Governor Pritzker to prevent the spread of COVID-19. We will utilize Home Learning/E-Learning days for the week of March 16-20 and Monday, March 30, 2020.

Home Learning/ E-Learning

Students PK-6 will receive pencil paper learning activities that have been prepared by each child’s teachers. Those activities can be picked up at main offices of James R Wood Elementary (K-4) or Somonauk Middle School (5-6) on Monday, March 16, 2020, between the hours of 12:00 pm and 5:00 pm.

Students in grades 7-12 will receive an email by 12:00 pm from each subject area teacher with information outlining instructional access to the Home learning curriculum. Students who left their Chromebook and/or chargers at school can pick them up at school. Paper copies can be made available if needed.

The week of March 23-27, 2020 Somonauk School District will NOT have Home Learning days due to SPRING BREAK.

Arbor Management Inc., the Somonauk School District food service, is working closely with our administration to make lunch available for our students who qualify for our Free lunch program. Currently, we are planning a “grab and go” cold lunch option that could be picked up at Somonauk High school, or with the possibility of being delivered to homes if transportation is an issue. (Although we will not provide lunch during spring break.) We will continue to adjust this effort to meet the changing needs of our community during these uncertain times. If you are interested in utilizing this option or have questions, please email freelunch@somonauk.net.

All extracurricular activities and athletics will be suspended from Monday, March 16th through Monday, March 30. Practices and contests are canceled with the hope of rescheduling the contests. Practice will resume on Tuesday, March 31, 2020.
