VETERANS DAY 2020
Somonauk Community Unit School District #432 would like to honor our United States Veterans during the week of Veterans Day. While our annual school assembly cannot take place in person this year, we would still like to acknowledge our local veterans who selflessly served our country. Please help us pay tribute to them in a virtual ceremony by sending a digital photo or two, possibly “then” and “now”, of a veteran that you know, as well as branch served, time period, and any special recognition (i.e., Lt. John Patrick, Army, 1965-1969, 2 Bronze Stars)
Somonauk School District values the service of our Veterans, we look forward to honoring them and their families this year. Please send the pictures to nesse@somonauk.net by November 2, 2020, in order to be included in the presentation.

UPDATE on Somonauk School LUNCH On Monday, August 31, 2020 the USDA, U.S. Department of Agriculture announced that they will extend FREE lunch to all children in the fall months during the COVID -19 pandemic. Please fill out this form if you would like a lunch delivered for your child(ren).
https://forms.gle/Um93fPS4wYtDhuie9
**Due to Labor Day holiday, lunch deliveries will be on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week.

We will be providing multiple opportunities for parents of students to receive educational support materials from the school:
Tuesday: We will have a drive-thru pick up at the circle drive on Market Street (Rt. 34) at the HS gym. This will take place from 5:00 pm-7:00 pm. Parents will drive up and give the names of their child/children and we will bring the materials to your car.
Wednesday: Buses will deliver materials to the homes of those who did not pick up on Tuesday evening. Due to the nature of what is being delivered, we will not leave items on a doorstep. The delivery will take place between the hours of 11:00 am and 3:00 pm. We will knock and wait for an answer and if no one is home we will return the materials to the school. We will also have a second pick up Wednesday evening from 4-6 for any leftover materials. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call the school.
This does not apply to families who chose option #2 and have already received a Chromebook.
We are looking forward to seeing our kids starting this Thursday, August 27.

A Note From Principal Snider:
Good Morning SMS Students,
It is 9:30 am Monday morning and the school already feels empty without you! Your teachers are working hard to prepare learning experiences for you for the next several days. Please know that we are all thinking of each and every one of you. Do not hesitate to send any or all of us an email. Whether it is a question about your schoolwork or just a friendly email to say 'hi', we want to hear from you!
As you navigate the next several days, please keep in mind that the goal is to always do it 'The Bobcat Way'.
I am Respectful of my self, others and property.
Treat others the way that you would want to be treated. Be kind to your family members, friends, and anyone else who you may interact with. Be respectful of others' space. Practice social distancing to remain healthy. Say 'please' and 'thank you' to show appreciation to others. Are your words and actions filling other's buckets or are they taking away from other's buckets? Help out around home!
I am accountable for my choices, actions, words and for my learning.
Everything that you do in life is a choice. Think before you act and make the right choice. You will be given school work that your teacher's have prepared for you. This is your opportunity to be accountable for your learning. Make a schedule/plan for each day. Each of you have different responsibilities at home, so make a schedule/plan that works for you. Find a daily balance in your life that includes time for learning, family, and self. Do not underestimate the importance of daily routines!
I am persistent by problem solving, never giving up, and growing from my mistakes.
There may be times where you have questions on your school work. Be resourceful. Always put forth your best effort. Try. Do not be afraid to make mistakes. Thomas Edison said: "Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is to always just try one more time."
I am Successful.
Successful people look for opportunities to grow and better themselves. See this opportunity to grow as a learner and most importantly as a person. Establish a daily routine. Make others around you happy. Take the opportunity to read and write daily. Celebrate your own learning. Celebrate THE BOBCAT WAY.
We cannot wait to see each and every one of you soon! PLEASE check in frequently with me or any of your teachers! YOU matter to us.

Good morning,
I wanted to send a reminder that pick up for 5th and 6th grade student eLearning packets is today (Monday, March 16) from 12-5 at Somonauk Middle School. eLearning packets will be located in the cafeteria and each student's packet will be labeled. Please enter through the south cafeteria doors (these are the same doors that your student would enter the building on a school day). If your student needs to gather any supplies in a locker, the hallways will be open. Additionally, Mr. Lambert has communicated with band students as to how to access band instruments. Everyone who enters the building is expected to follow social distancing guidelines.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out!

We could not be more proud to announce that SMS raised $891.21 in our Bucket’s for Baldrick’s Tournament! That amount will be added to the district’s total raised in the fight against childhood cancer. The final round was so close and went down to the final moments of the competition. However, after a hard fought battle, the 6th grade boys were able to come out on top for the victory! They have had their sights set on winning this tournament since their second place finish last year. Congratulations on being persistent, winning the pizza party, and most importantly supporting the fight against childhood cancer!

SMS Talent show is coming up! Talent show permission slips available here:
https://core-docs.s3.amazonaws.com/documents/asset/uploaded_file/615275/0595_001.pdf

Buckets for Baldrick's update! In just one week SMS raised over $250! Let's keep the momentum going! Keep bringing in those pennies for your team's bucket and silver to sabotage either the team you are up against or the team that bumped you out! All of the money collected will be donated to the FIGHT AGAINST CHILDHOOD CANCER!

The Junior Council Leadership Board is excited to announce that they have raised funds to offer the teachers an educational mini-grant. From their hard-work they have raised $300 and wanted to give back to our school through two mini-grants of $150 each! After careful consideration they presented the checks to the two lucky winners! We can’t wait to see the visual art Mrs. Miller is going to add in the hallway and the TV in the cafeteria for announcements and pictures that Miss Ashley was hoping for!

As a reminder, St. Baldrick's fundraising has officially started! If you would like to shave your head and raise funds for Childhood Cancer Research, please stop down in the office to pick up an informational envelope. Any student who raises at least $50 will get a free shirt! If you receive a Shavee packet, please create your account online ASAP to submit your information and give us your shirt size! Also, don’t forget that Bobcat stocking hats are still available for $15!

Poetry Club is canceled for today and is rescheduled for tomorrow after school until 3:45.

ATTENTION 6th Grade parents: Don't forget the STEMFest parent meeting tonight at 5:30 in the Middle School Cafeteria!

Don't wait and have all those summer camp registrations sneak up at once! Sign up for the Bobcat Soccer Camp TODAY!

DUE TO PENDING WEATHER FOR TOMORROW MORNING, OAV IS CANCELED FOR TOMORROW MORNING.

The 8th Grade Girls Basketball Tournament in Paw Paw has been canceled for tomorrow.

To All Bobcats,
On Friday March 13th we will be celebrating our Second Annual St. Baldrick's Assembly/Shaving Event at 1:30. You will be receiving more information about all of our events as we get closer to the event. Last year we raised over $12,000 as a district, we look forward to another spectacular year, raising funds for Childhood Cancer Research!
Our first fundraiser as a district will be our annual Stocking Hat. This year's grey hat with a blue, yellow and white pom pom, sports BOBCATS embroidered in white and a gold 4 leaf clover in support of children with Cancer. Students and or staff that purchase a hat are allowed to wear this hat in the building throughout the day. These hats will be sold for $15.00, and can be purchased in each building's main office. Please make checks payable to Somonauk CUSD #432. Proceeds will go towards our district's fundraising efforts.

Congratulations to 8th Grader Madeline Short for winning first place at the spelling bee. Aubrey Chiavario came in second place. Madeline and Aubrey will represent SMS at the Dekalb County Spelling Bee. In addition, Ellie Wiegman, Ava Diederich, and Landon Hawkins completed the top five and will compete at the Junior 10 spelling competition. Other participants were Mikey Lewinski, Anthony Spilman, Abby Hohmann, Ava Warner, Quinten Hentschel, Junia Johnson, Jake Miller, Emma Rominski, and Eden Shaw. Congratulations to all of our top SMS spellers!

Congratulations to Tanner Daniels, Hailey Gilchrist, Madelyn Hernandez, Alex Hoffman, Nolan Kerley, Abigail Hohmann and Landin Stillwell for participating in the School Finals of the National Geographic Bee. Aiden Wold placed third. Luke Newlin placed 2nd and our National Geographic School Bee Champion is Cole Gudmunson.

Dog Wheelchairs are expensive, and many shelter animals do not have access to them. 6th Grade STEM wanted to correct this problem by designing and donating their own hand-made dog-wheelchairs - at a low cost! After reaching out to the Tails Humane Society of DeKalb, the 6th Grade STEM class was invited to donate their products and spend some time with the animals! They had an amazing time and their efforts will never be forgotten.

Candy cane gram sales are underway. You may purchase candy cane grams at lunch for 25 cents/gram. All grams will be delivered during the lunch hours on Friday, December 20th. When making purchases, don't forget friends, teachers, and staff members...they will all love to receive a candy cane gram from you. To honor the idea of giving is more important than receiving, purchase a gram as a random act of kindness for someone outside your circle of friends this holiday season!
Other than making someone's day, the coolest thing about our candy cane gram sales is that all profits raised will be used to purchase items from the giving trees for Somonauk families in need!

STEM Club hour of code ends at 4:30 today!

How many times have you asked ‘would you like to buy a Rosati’s gift card and support Somonauk Middle School?’ A 5th grade student stopped in the office yesterday and said he is up to 16 certificates sold and he still has 2 more days to go! Will he be a top 4 seller? Will YOU? How does free pizza for a YEAR sound? Keep on selling, SMS! Orders are due Friday morning!

The Book Fair is here! Shop in the SMS Library today through Thursday or online here:
https://bookfairs.scholastic.com/bookfairs/cptoolkit/homepage.do?method=homepage&url=somonaukmiddleschool1
If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Zaeske in the Library or by email at zaesked@somonauk.net

For our fifth consecutive year, we are excited to announce that we will again be participating in the Rosati's fundraiser. This is a quick and easy fundraiser that will help our school raise money for technology and teaching tools as well as for student recognition incentives and events.
The fundraiser is simple. Today, your student will bring home an envelope that outlines the fundraiser and it will also have a list attached to include names of people who purchase a Rosati's gift certificate. Rosati's will give our school $5 for every $20 gift certificate that we sell. Checks should be made out to Somonauk Middle School.
On Friday, November 8, after one week of selling, students are to bring back their envelopes with money for gift certificates. We will remove the money from the envelopes and stuff them with gift certificates and send them home with your student that same day.
Any student who sells 5 gift certificates will get a free kids pizza delivered from Rosati's to SMS lunch on November 15.
The top 4 sellers in the school will receive a coupon for one free pizza a month for a year.
Here are some of our 'Hall of Fame' students over the last two years:
Julian Diaz has sold 62 gift certificates (31 each year) over the last two years!
Gavin Lorentzen sold 31 gift certificates over the last two years!
Olivia Taylor sold 43 gift certificates over the last two years!
Sienna Deacon sold 29 gift certificates over the last two years!
Collectively, these four students have sold $3,300 worth of gift certificates and raised $825 for our school over the last two years! Julian told me today he WILL be selling 38 in order to reach the hundred mark...how awesome is that?!?!
Thank you to everyone for participating and helping our school! Imagine if every student could sell 5 gift certificates and get a free pizza delivered on November 15! I would love to call in that order for 230 kids pizzas to be delivered at lunch!

Students in Mr. Roberts' Class had a choice for their 5 Themes of Social Studies Enrichment Project. One of the options that students chose to investigate and create was Geography. Students within the pictures made topography maps of different regions throughout the World. Many students created the topography maps with salt dough or clay and then painted them to emphasize elevation. Students identified parts of a map and wrote an explanation in regards to the region, for the enrichment project.
